Abstract

This research aims to comprehensively and in-depth analyze the problems experienced by students in online mahārah al-kalām learning. This qualitative research with a case study design involved 40 students of the Arabic Language Education study program at Universitas Sunan Gresik. Data collection was carried out through participatory observation and documentation techniques during virtual lectures. The results of the study indicate that the problems are divided into two main dimensions: non-linguistic and linguistic. In the non-linguistic dimension, the generation invisible phenomenon was found where students massively turned off their cameras (off-camera) to perform multitasking (such as teaching at other institutions and caring for children), resulting in a critical loss of cognitive presence and non-verbal interaction. Furthermore, network infrastructure constraints worsened communication quality. In the linguistic dimension, the virtual format thwarted the effectiveness of ṭarīqah al-mumārasah (drill) due to audio latency which prevented lecturers from correcting makhārij al-ḥurūf precisely. Furthermore, there was a severe disruption of academic integrity due to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students rely heavily on AI when asked to compose spontaneous muḥādatsah sentences, and exploit virtual proctoring loopholes (e-cheating) during mufradāt memorization exams. In conclusion, the online format significantly disrupts the acquisition process of Arabic speaking skills, demanding urgent methodological engineering and more adaptive, cheat-proof oral evaluation systems.
