Kajian Kritis Al-‘Arabiyyah Baina Yadaik Jilid II Berdasarkan Kriteria Greene dan Petty: Perspektif Linguistik, Visual, dan Pembelajaran Mandiri
Abstract
The methodological transformation in communicative Arabic language teaching in higher education demands a critical evaluation of international standard textbooks used as primary references. This study focuses on the study of the textbook Al-‘Arabiyyah Baina Yadaik (ABY) Volume II, designed for intermediate-level learners (al-mustawā al-mutawassiṭ), using Greene and Petty's ten criteria, encompassing interest, motivation, illustration, linguistics, correlation, stimulation, conceptual clarity, viewpoint, value reinforcement, and individual differences. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through library research and content analysis, drawing on ABY Volume II (Parts 2A and 2B) by Dr. Abdurrahman bin Ibrahim Al-Fauzan, Dr. Mukhtar Ath-Thahir Husain, and Dr. Muhammad Abdul Khaliq Fadhl, covering themes from health to global civilization. Findings reveal a clear asymmetry: Book 2A performs well across most criteria, while Book 2B shows significant weaknesses in morphosyntactic gradation, symbolic illustration dependency in Units 12–13, and the absence of answer keys and differentiation pathways. The study additionally identifies an embedded pattern of Fundamentalist Educational Ideology in Book 2B—a dimension no prior ABY evaluation had examined. These findings confirm that ABY Volume II requires supplementary instruments to function effectively as a self-directed learning resource, and underscore the value of integrating Greene and Petty's framework with critical discourse analysis in future Arabic textbook evaluations.
