Semiotika Makna Motivasi Lirik Lagu Humud Al-Khudır Hāwil Marrah Ukhrā, Kun Fudūliyā, Tasna'u Al-Mustahil

Abstract

This study analyses the denotative, connotative, and motivational meanings in Humud Al-Khudher’s songs “Hāwil Marrah Ukhrā,” “Kun Fudūliyā,” and “Tasna'u Al-Mustahil” using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory and David McClelland’s achievement motivation theory. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through library research. Primary data consist of selected Arabic lyric lines and stanzas from the three songs, obtained from official YouTube channels. Secondary data come from relevant Arabic dictionaries, translation references, and scholarly literature. Data were selected purposively based on explicit or implicit motivational content and analysed through denotation and connotation, then interpreted using McClelland's three motivational needs: achievement, affiliation, and power. The results show that “Hāwil Marrah Ukhrā” conveys perseverance, self-evaluation, and the need for achievement; “Kun Fudūliyā” emphasises curiosity, questioning, intellectual exploration, and the need for affiliation; while “Tasna'u Al-Mustahil” highlights determination, leadership, overcoming limitations, and the need for power. The three songs present complementary motivational meanings that can be understood as a self-development cycle involving knowledge, persistence, and action. The study concludes that Humud Al-Khudher’s lyrics construct motivational messages through layered signs and represent three interrelated motivational orientations within McClelland’s framework.
