The Effectiveness of the Implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Strategy in Improving the Learning Outcomes of IPAS Subjects for Grade IV Students of SDIT Al-Fikri Makassar

Abstract

Students’ learning outcomes are a primary indicator of the success of the learning process, encompassing knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Learning motivation and the learning environment significantly influence students’ academic achievement; therefore, teachers need to implement instructional strategies that encourage critical and creative thinking as well as problem-solving skills. One strategy considered effective is Problem Based Learning (PBL), as it actively engages students in solving real-world problems relevant to their daily lives. This study aims to examine the implementation of the PBL strategy in IPAS learning, describe students’ learning outcomes after the application of PBL, and analyze the effectiveness of PBL in improving the learning outcomes of fourth-grade students at SDIT Al-Fikri Makassar. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a pretest–posttest control group design. One class was assigned as the experimental group using the PBL strategy, while another class served as the control group using conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through learning outcome tests and analyzed using a t-test and N-Gain analysis. The results indicate that the implementation of PBL has a significant effect on improving students’ IPAS learning outcomes. The N-Gain score of the experimental group was in the moderate category (0.58) and higher than that of the control group. The t-test results showed a significance value of < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference. Therefore, the PBL strategy is effective in improving IPAS learning outcomes and making the learning process more meaningful and contextual.
