Al-Muhith: Jurnal Ilmu Qur'an dan Hadits accepts two types of manuscripts: Original Research Articles and Review Articles. Each manuscript must fall into one of these categories and meet the academic, methodological, and structural requirements appropriate to its type.
Authors are required to select the appropriate manuscript type at the time of submission and prepare their manuscripts in accordance with the journal’s Author Guidelines. The selected manuscript type must accurately reflect the research design, methodological approach, characteristics of the sources or evidence used, and primary objectives of the submitted article.
The Editorial Team reserves the right to reclassify a manuscript if the selected type does not accurately represent the nature, objectives, or methodology of the research presented.
1. Original Research Article
An Original Research Article reports the results of original scholarly research conducted by the author(s) and contributes to the advancement of knowledge in Qur’anic and Hadith Studies. It must address a clearly formulated research problem, employ an appropriate and transparent methodological approach, and present original findings or interpretations supported by relevant evidence and scholarly analysis.
Original Research Articles may adopt textual, historical, philological, linguistic, literary, thematic, hermeneutical, comparative, contextual, or empirical approaches, depending on the objectives and subject matter of the research. The journal welcomes studies of the Qur’an and Hadith from both classical and contemporary perspectives, including Qur’anic exegesis, Hadith commentary, the analysis of Hadith transmission and content, Qur’anic and Hadith manuscripts, intellectual history, and social and cultural practices related to the Qur’an and Hadith.
Relevant research topics include, but are not limited to, Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith studies, Qur’anic and Hadith hermeneutics, linguistic and literary analysis, thematic studies of Qur’anic surahs and Hadith, textual criticism, manuscript studies, the Qur’an and Hadith in Late Antiquity, and Living Qur’an and Hadith studies. Qualitative and other empirical studies examining the reception, interpretation, transmission, and practice of the Qur’an and Hadith within particular communities or social contexts are also welcome.
Recommended Article Structure
As a general guideline, Original Research Articles should follow the structure below, with appropriate adjustments according to the research design and relevant scholarly conventions:
Title – Abstract – Keywords – Introduction – Research Methods – Results and Discussion – Conclusion – Acknowledgments (if applicable) – Declarations (if relevant) – Bibliography
Methodological Requirements. The Research Methods section must clearly explain the approach and procedures used to address the research problem. Depending on the nature of the study, this section may include the research design, primary and secondary sources, criteria for selecting texts or manuscripts, criteria for selecting relevant literature, analytical framework, procedures for interpreting or comparing textual evidence, data collection techniques, and methods of analysis.
For studies of Qur’anic exegesis and Hadith commentary, authors should identify the texts under examination, the relevant exegetical or interpretive traditions, and the analytical procedures used to support their arguments. Studies of Hadith transmission or textual criticism should explain the criteria and procedures used to examine the isnad (chain of transmission), matn (text), or textual variants, as appropriate to the research objectives. Manuscript-based studies should identify the manuscripts examined and explain the procedures used for analysis, comparison, or textual criticism. Historical and contextual studies should establish the relevance and reliability of their sources and explain how the evidence is interpreted.
Empirical studies, including research on Living Qur’an and Hadith, should describe the research setting, participants or informants, data sources, data collection procedures, analytical techniques, and relevant ethical considerations. Authors must ensure that their methods are appropriate to their research questions and that their findings and interpretations are adequately supported by the evidence presented.
2. Review Article
A Review Article presents a critical and analytical examination of scholarly literature relevant to Qur’anic and Hadith Studies. Its purpose is to evaluate and synthesize existing ideas, approaches, findings, or research developments in order to provide a deeper understanding of a particular topic or scholarly problem.
Review Articles may examine developments in Qur’anic exegesis, Hadith studies, methodology and hermeneutics, the history of Qur’anic interpretation, manuscript research, and Living Qur’an and Hadith studies. They may also explore differences in scholarly perspectives, intellectual developments, and methodological issues within classical and contemporary scholarly traditions, provided that the subject matter is relevant to the journal’s focus and scope.
Review Articles must establish a clear objective, draw on relevant sources, and provide critical analysis and synthesis that contribute to the advancement of Qur’anic and Hadith Studies. A manuscript that merely summarizes scholars’ opinions or describes the findings of previous studies without meaningful analysis does not meet the requirements of a Review Article.
Recommended Article Structure
Review Articles may generally follow the structure below:
Title – Abstract – Keywords – Introduction – Review Methods or Analytical Approach – Results and Discussion – Conclusion – Bibliography
This structure may be adapted to suit the objectives, approach, and characteristics of the review. Authors may adopt a different organizational structure when necessary to present their analysis logically and systematically, while still adhering to the journal’s Author Guidelines.
Review Requirements. Authors must explain the objectives and approach of the review and establish the rationale for selecting the sources examined. They must also provide critical analysis, comparisons of scholarly perspectives, or a synthesis of ideas relevant to the issue under discussion.
For reviews employing a systematic review or scoping review approach, the procedures for searching, selecting, and analyzing the literature must be described transparently and in accordance with the method employed. For interpretive or historical literature reviews, authors should explain the analytical approach and the rationale for using sources relevant to the objectives of the review.
Review Articles must make a clear scholarly contribution to the advancement of Qur’anic and Hadith Studies. Such contributions may include synthesizing existing knowledge, critically evaluating previous scholarship, identifying unresolved issues, or developing new perspectives on the subject under examination.
Classification and General Requirements
Manuscript classification is determined by the primary research objective and methodological approach, rather than solely by the topic under discussion. For example, an article examining a single Qur’anic surah through thematic or linguistic analysis may be classified as an Original Research Article if it presents an original analytical contribution. Similarly, research examining a Hadith commentary, a particular manuscript, or a historical exegetical tradition may be classified as an Original Research Article if it develops an original argument through systematic source analysis.
A study of Living Qur’an or Hadith practices within a particular community may also be classified as an Original Research Article if it employs an appropriate empirical research design. The fact that a study focuses on a single community, institution, manuscript, or scholarly work does not, by itself, determine its manuscript type.
All submitted manuscripts must comply with the journal’s Author Guidelines, including requirements concerning manuscript format and length, language, abstracts, keywords, citation style, references, originality, and plagiarism screening. Manuscripts must be written in Indonesian, English, or Arabic, in accordance with the journal’s language requirements. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their submissions constitute original scholarly work, are supported by adequate documentation, employ appropriate methodological approaches, and fall within the focus and scope of Al-Muhith.
